At the University of Pittsburgh, the Campbell Biology textbook was new this year, sold as a “custom” edition costing $90. The customization was that an entire section was removed from the last edition. Even the page numbers were left intact; the “custom” edition ended Section 5 at page 544 and started again at page 718. The effect: Last Spring the store did not buy the “old” edition because a “custom” edition was coming out, and students selling received nothing rather than $45 for a used book sale. This Fall, instead of buying a used book costing $67, they paid $90 for the “custom” book. In addition, at the end of term, they will get nothing because no one knows if the next professor will want the missing 174 pages.
